Spartanburg Youth Council's Literacy Day - April 17, 2008

The Mayor's Service Board is a brand-new initiative of the Spartanburg Youth Council and the United Way.

Although small now, the goal is to eventually have one representative from each service and leadership group at each public and private high school in the county. Membership is open to any interested high school students. Its purpose is to encourage leadership through service in our community.

The Mayor's Service Board, after learning of many of the issues Spartanburg faces, decided to focus on youth and education for 2008.

They chose to adopt a school, and after touring some, and meeting with the principals, chose Mary H. Wright.

They then decided to hold a Reading Celebration on April 17th, Spartanburg Youth Council's Literacy Day.

Reading Celebration @ MH Wright: 2:30-5:30 on Thursday April 17th.

The event will include a kick-off with the Mayor, a birthday celebration for Principal Pat Paul, pizza, cake, and ice cream; reading games and activities, face painting, a moon bounce, door prizes, and free books for the students!

The Mayor's Service Board has worked hard to solicit donations for food, drinks, and prizes, in addition to collecting nearly 1,000 books in just a few short weeks! Need more information? Contact L. Hurley at 864-562-4199.

Youth in Philanthropy Project Fundraiser
All Proceeds Benefit Spartanburg Non-Profits Serving Youth and Education

Be heard. Make an Impact.
Make it a Positive One. Youth Voices' slogans.

This group of students ages 11-17 has been around for only 2 years, and already they've established a presence in Spartanburg, and a reputation for their commitment to our community. Nominated by members of the Spartanburg Youth Council, they include southside, westside, eastside, northside and countryside; students of all different backgrounds, opinions, ideas, and beliefs. Each is united to raise awareness of youth issues, and to steadily increase their
fundraising through the Youth in Philanthropy Project.

Last year, Youth Voices' YIPP raised $12,000 to benefit youth and education in Spartanburg. Their goal this year: even more. In addition to their usual fundraising, they want to increase public awareness of their efforts and the indispensable role young people can play in making a difference in their own community. Their idea: Give all youth a voice and an opportunity to pitch in. The forum: Open Mic Nite at Hub-Bub.

So, got a talent? Want to be heard? Want to join an effort to make a difference? See you there.

Talk 20 @ Hub-Bub

Talk20 Spartanburg invites everyone to be a presenter of YOUR thoughts, YOUR passion, YOUR art, YOUR research, YOUR ideas.
Presenters get 20 images to show – and 20 seconds to talk about each one, no more, no less – in front of an audience that gathers 3 times a year at the Showroom @ Hub-Bub. Topics range from sculpture to the history of punk rock to the history of Spartanburg’s streetcar system. Take a vicarious walk in someone else's shoes, or just gain a fresh perspective at Talk20 Spartanburg.
Talk20 events also are happening in Boston, Chicago and other cities around the world, including Barcelona, Spain.

Spartanburg's event is intended to spur creativity and dialogue while giving people a forum to share a topic of interest they might not otherwise have -- their climb of Mount Kilimanjaro, for instance. Or the experimental aircraft one local man constructs and flies himself. No subject is too offbeat!

For more information, or if you are interested in presenting, email cate.ryba@gmail.com.
